People tell me all the time that living off grid is illegal.
It’s not.
This cabin has a legal occupancy permit. I went through inspections, paperwork, zoning, and the full county process starting with very little money. So why does it feel illegal to so many people?

Why it feels illegal
In my experience, it usually comes down to three things:
- Most codes were written for subdivisions. They assume dense development with utilities, not someone building slowly and intentionally on acreage.
- Confusion spreads faster than facts. Many people repeat what someone told them about laws and permits without reading the actual zoning and code language.
- Infrastructure assumptions create friction. Homes, utilities, and financing systems are built around public water, sewer, and power. When you step outside that template, the extra process can feel like prohibition.
Living off grid isn’t illegal. It’s just not common. And uncommon things often feel harder than they are.
