The Frugal Off Grid Directory is currently focused on the United States, but the same overall process can be used almost anywhere in the world.

If your country or region is not yet included in the directory, start by identifying a few areas that interest you. Then contact the local planning or building authority and ask about the regulations that apply to your project. Comparing several regions before purchasing land can save you a significant amount of time, money, and frustration.
