Worldwide Tech Outage. Airports, banks, and telecoms affected.
What you need to know:
"LONDON − Major airlines, media companies, banks and telecoms firms around the world reported systems outages Friday that were disrupting their operations.
In the U.S., American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines were among those who grounded flights less than an hour after Microsoft said it resolved a cloud-services-related outage that impacted several low-cost carriers.
It was not immediately clear whether the call to keep flights from taking off was related to the Microsoft cloud outage. The Washington state-based tech giant did not immediately return an emailed request for comment." (USA TODAY)
How this could affect you:
- Many Airlines in the U.S have grounded all flights.
- Some banks have experienced issues with tech.
- Some telecoms have been affected.
- Some transportation systems are experiencing difficulties.
- Some hospitals report not being able to set appointments.
- Many retail locations unable to process payments.
An off grid living perspective on the worldwide Tech Outage:
This outage is a great reminder of how fickle tech can be. Without any notice it's possible to be put into a scenario where you have no access to money in your bank account. No access to transportation or a hospital.
Here's a powerful example of why being prepared simply makes sense. You are not a conspiracy theorist for having a 72 hour kit. Access to food, water and shelter and enough cash to get by for a few days.
Can you imagine if today, you lost access to all money in your bank accounts, access to a hospital and transportation?
Suddenly having a frugal homestead sounds more appealing. Somewhere to get away while things cool down should people start to panic in the city. Somewhere that you can produce your own food and water, meaning you don't need to rely on transportation and money to survive.
It's reported that this is simply a tech issue that should be worked out within days and it's likely not a cyber attack. None the less, it's a good reminder to be prepared.

JJ, I agree with you. Something like this could easily destroy the economy or lead to any number of systems being forced to shut down.
i usually am pretty optimistic about tech outages, but my first reaction is to wish we were a bit more power proficient with solar, and a way to energize the well pump (240v). Internet/technology being disrupted long term is spooky, IMO.
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear that there’s a worldwide Tech Outage?
